Quilts From the Collection of Arlan and Pat Christ

"The Art of the Needle: Quilts from the Collection
of Arlan and Pat Christ"

As a painter uses paint and a brush to create a work of art...the quilter uses fabric and a needle to create a family heirloom. Pennsylvania Germans were surrounded by color in their homes by pottery, painted furniture, decorative samplers and textiles. It is no mystery that this love of color would be reflected in their quilts. The quilts chosen for this particular exhibit have not been exhibited before and will showcase the glorious colors of the Pennsylvania Germans in the late 1800s. Their love of color is exhibited in the bright, bold and sometimes unusual choice of fabric. Printed fabric was also used for quilt backing and will be shared during the exhibit.

Pat and Arlan Christ have lived their entire life in "Pennsylvania Dutch Country" and are thankful for the opportunity to share some of their local history during this exhibit. They hope you will enjoy this exhibit as much as they have enjoyed bringing it to you.

Spring Exhibit now open!
Hours: Wed-Sat 10am-3pm EST

A further note from Arlan and Pat Christ
When asked if we would be willing to provide quilts from our collection to exhibit in the Marie Webster House for The Quilters Hall of Fame, we did not hesitate to jump at the opportunity. We had attended The Quilters Hall of Fame Celebration in July 2011 to witness the induction of Ardis and Robert James. During the celebration we met so many wonderful people who have the same passion of sharing the history of quilts and quilt making; enjoying the works of art from past generations and having the quilts “talk to you”.

Our first exhibit was held at the Kutztown Historical Society in Berks County, Pennsylvania in May of 2009. “Pennsylvania Quilt Treasures: The Art of the Needle” included 32 of our finest Pennsylvania quilts from the 1800’s. Since then we have had the opportunity to purchase additional early quilts from the Berks County area. The quilts chosen for this particular exhibit have not been exhibited before and will showcase the glorious colors of the Pennsylvania Germans in the late 1800’s. Their love of color is exhibited in the bright, bold and sometimes unusual choice of fabric. Printed fabric was also used for the quilt backing and will be shared during the exhibit.
